Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus)The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly known as Victoria Terminus Station, in Mumbai, is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture in India, blended with themes deriving from Indian traditional architecture. The building, designed by the British architect F. W. Stevens, became the symbol of Bombay as the ‘Gothic City’ and the major international mercantile port of India. The terminal was built over 10 years, starting in 1878, according to a High Victorian Gothic design based on late medieval Italian models. Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and eccentric ground plan are close to traditional Indian palace architecture. It is an outstanding example of the meeting of two cultures, as British architects worked with Indian craftsmen to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms thus forging a new style unique to Bombay.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is one of the major train stations in Mumbai. Its also one of the most beautiful train station buildings in the world. Its an amazing mix of Gothic revival and Indo-Islamic style especially in the many domes that crown the roof of the station. Inside the station is free l richly decorated with gilded columns, statues and relief sculptures. Definitely go both day and night as its beautifully lit up then. Sun down is also a good time to go as the fading sunlight reflects beautifully off the red bricks.

The terminus was designed by British born architectural engineer Frederick William Stevens, in an exuberant Italian Gothic style. Its construction began in 1878, and was completed in 1887, the year marking 50 years of Queen Victorias rule, the building being named, Victoria Terminus. In March 1996 the stations name was changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (with station code CST) after Shivaji, the 17th-century warrior chieftain who employed guerrilla tactics to contest the Mughal Empire.Shivajis name is often preceded by Chhatrapati, a title with lmean, a king dignified by the emblem of a parasol; a great king. In 2017, the station was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (with code CSTM), where the title Maharaj has literal meaning, Great king; emperor. The terminus is the headquarters of Indias Central Railway. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India,[14] serving as a terminal for both long-distance- and suburban trains such as Rajdhani, Duronto, Garib Rath and Tejas Express.CSMT has a total of 18 platforms—seven platforms are for suburban EMU trains and eleven platforms (Platform 8 to Platform 18) are for long-distance trains. The heritage building retains a large percentage of its original structural integrity. The authenticity of the structure expresses the rich Italian gothic style through the eye catching 3D-stone carvings of local species of animals, flora and fauna, symbols, arched tympana, portrait roundels of human faces, and stone mesh works on the decorated rose windows. The elaborate detailing of the heritage building is original. It has carvings made in local yellow malad stones blended with Italian marble and polished granite in a few places. The property has been declared as a “Heritage Grade – I” structure under the resolution of Maharashtra State Government Act on 21st April 1997. Continual efforts are being made to improve the overall state of the property and to ensure that the same does not decay due to its use by commuters and visitors.Owned by - Indian RailwaysLine(s) - Central Line, Harbour LinePlatforms - 18Tracks - MultipleConnections - Bus interchange, Mumbai Metro (WIP)Toilets - AvailableATM - AvailableCanteen - Available

Head to the energetic, coastal city of Mumbai—home to ultra-wealthy entrepreneurs and the hottest Bollywood actors. Tourists are never far from five-star hotels or gourmet restaurants in this luxe city. And even if those activities are out of budget, a cruise down the beloved Marine Drive will make you feel like royalty as you catch a glimpse of the scenic coast and glamorous Art Deco buildings. You can also see a more authentic, local side of Mumbai in the bustling Thieves Market or at the Churchgate railway station, where hundreds of thousands of homemade lunches are packed up for delivery to the citys office workers every day.Make sure you devote a day to checking out Sanjay Gandhi National Park and exploring the 2,000-year-old Kanheri Cave carvings
