Churchgate is the Southern terminus on the Western Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. It is located in Churchgate in South Mumbai, Maharashtra. One of the three gates of the fortified island city of Mumbai was at this place. This gate led straight to Saint Thomas Cathedral Church, Hence it was named as Church Gate. The gate was demolished in 1860. The Construction of station was completed by 1870 and It was named as Churchgate Station. [1]This is the first station of the Western Railway suburban network of Mumbai. Churchgate station is a terminus of Western Railway line of Mumbai suburban railway. It is the southernmost station of the city, though up to the 1931, Colaba was the southernmost station, however the rail line was removed beyond Churchgate, making Churchgate the southernmost station.[2][3]The Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (present Western Railway) was inaugurated in 1855 with the construction of rail line(BG) between Ankleshwar and Uttaran (a distance of 29 miles). In 1859 this line was further extended on the west coast up to Bombay. By 1867, a track along the foreshore, further than Grant Road station was constructed, up to the station named as Bombay Backbay near Marine Lines. On 12 April 1867, the first suburban train was started with one train each way from Virar to Bombay Back Bay. The stations were then named, Viraur, Neela, Bassein, Panje, Borewla, Pahadee, Andaru, Santa Cruz, Bandor

The southern most tip of Western Railway and very close to the Western Railway headquarters. The station is relatively clean as compared to other railway stations in Mumbai. The Fort area built by the Britishers had three main gates. The one gate was entry to St. Thomas Church which was located where Flora Fountain is there today. This gate was demolished in 1860. Later the railway station was built in close proximity to the position of the demolished gate. Hence the name Churchgate. For tourists the station bis worth a visit as it shows how Mumbai works in synchronisation with the clock. One gets the pulse and feel of Mumbai just by watching Mumbaikars of different hues frantically getting off and boarding local trains and completely oblivious about the crowds around them !There a are a few shops and eateries and sort of a short waiting hall at the southern tip of the station which is also connected to underground pedestrian passage thronged by hawkers.Adjacent to the eastern side of the station is the majestic colonial architectural beauty that is Western Railway Headquarters.
