‘Sadhu ka Bagh.’ Some of cave walls used to be covered with paintings made from red clay, but nearly all of them have faded away with time. An ancient water well also lies at a few minutes distance from here. Legend has it that the Mughal Emperor Akbar had it constructed, but only its remnants remain. However, natural streams can be found all around the area, heightening the serenity of the village. There are a couple of restaurants for visitors. You could simply drop in at any of them, order lunch and enjoy the breath-taking view of the hills. One such café is Sadhu’s Retreat, which was launched as an open air restaurant, for the visitors to enjoy good quality food. However, with the increasing number of visitors, it has been converted into a recreational area where families, students and colleagues from Rawalpindi and Islamabad come for respite from their daily routines. From Archery and Paint Ball to Trekking, Rock Climbing and Camping facilities, they’ve got it all.

A good place. Some very old caves, a dhaba or two, a restaurant and adventure sports. At a short hike, there is a stupa from Gandhara civilization. A shirt drive further into Margallah hills, there is an old step well ( Baoli) as well that is Saud to be from Sher Shah Suris times (1538-1545 AD).

The ancient garden called Sadhu ka Bagh actually doesnt exist anymore but the place is still called Sadhu Ka Bagh. As per the locals, the garden existed till 80s and contained many trees that were hundreds of years old, mostly mango tree. Somewhere in the 80s the land containing Sadhu ka Bagh was leased to someone by Govt authorities who installed a stone crushing machine at the site and for next more than a decade a stone crushing plant operated on the site.Locals of the area went to court and the case remained subjudice for many years but in vain. Only one tree from the old garden still exists.....rest is all gone. The photos show the current shape of the location where Sadhu ka Bagh once existed. How could we be so negligent towards something that was a national heritage....

Just behind Islamabad’s D-12 sector, a dilapidated road leads to Sadhu ka Bagh, a garden over 2,400 years old at the foot of the Margalla Hills in the Shah Allah Ditta village.History buffs and nature enthusiasts brave the road for what lies ahead: old banyan trees, ancient meditation caves for Hindu saints and a well of spring water. The origin of the caves are believed to be either Buddhist or Hindu; some older tales suggest that Hindu sadhus came to the area to meditate, and a garden spread across acres of land near the caves at the foot of the Margallas.

Sadhu ka Bagh is a wonderful place to visit. This place is unique because of the intrinsic scenic beauty as cool breeze in summer evenings touches the heart of a visitor. Calm and cool environment takes you to a world of peace and solitude. Terraces are available for functions under supervision of Green Hill where people can celebrate birthday parties etc. Caves have generally been a site of archaeology and reminds us of the people who use to live in, their livelihood was farming and keeping cattle was their need to get milk for nourishment and water still was the source of life which is still there. Nice place to visit on week ends. Sat-Sun before sunset. Security check post is there no worries. Do visit and be relaxed.

Sadhu ka Bagh is reputed to be an ancient Buddhist place of worship. There is a small complex consisting of two or three carved out spaces where the worshipper s are said to have meditated. There is an old Banyan tree up above on the hill with its roots hanging down to and over shadowing a spring. The legend is that there used to be a subterranean passage that went to the other side of the hills. There is an old mango tree planted nearby, people say it was planted by the Mughal emperor Humayun. The garden is nowhere in sight and rest of the area is also in a dilapidated state. The nearest village Shah Allah Ditta is on the passage way that lead to Hazara across Margalla hills. The same has been the route for many Invaders and Traveller of times forgotten.

A serene and peaceful place to spend your weekend especially if you live in islamabad. The road for Sadhu da bagh goes from the back of E11. The road is a little cracked but the turns look so eccentric from the top. Actually the road does need alot of repair at various patches but its a place worth going. The view of whole islamabad is breathtaking.

Nice place to visit along with friends and family. Excellent views of Islamabad from hill top. Huge dining area with different kind of seating options such as rock benches, Sofas etc. Its got seating available at four levels with nice views. Road isnt paved throughout the Hill top from end of Sector D-12 and its better to return before Sunset.Food is satisfactory. Excellent customer service. I tried Kafta Karahi which was actually 8 seekh kababs along with full size onion and tomato so they were themselves a seekh kabab size. It was served with Chapatis. There were three orders before mine, therefore I got served an hour and few minutes later but later on they told me that theres only one cook and they were also quite apologetic about being late.Unlike Monal bland food, Sadhu Ka Bagh was inexpensive and got a taste.

The caves contain 2,400-year-old Buddhist murals, as well as Buddhist relics dated to the 8th century. According to archaeologists, the caves, and the natural platform-like formations surrounding them, were used for meditation by Buddhist monks, Hindu sadhus, and Muslim ascetics during the Mughal period.

Other than the gardens and a great view, the site has some caves which according to the locals date back to the Budhist era. These caves were used by monks for meditation and religious rituals. The stories about this place being haunted are far fetched. Some caves were burnt in a fire. This place is fast becoming a tourist hotspot and care needs to br taken to preserve what ever is left of the site. Has a few tuck shops which offer tea, sodas and some munchies.
