Chauburji is located on Lahores Multan Road at the intersection of Bahawalpur Road, which leads southwards to Multan, and was the gateway to an extensive garden known to have existed in Mughal times. The name Chauburji, which translates as four towers was likely given by later generations, as the original site was seen as a monumental gateway to an extensive garden in the Mughal Princess Zeb-un-Nisa, who is believed to be referenced in an inscription naming her Sahib-e-Zebinda Begam-e-Dauran. The princess was eight years old at the time of construction, so it has been suggested that the inscription may actually be in reference to her aunt, Jahangira Begum, who was a daughter of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The garden for which Chauburji acted as a gateway no longer exists, and the structure is now located in a grassy roundabout at the busy intersection of Lahores Multan Road, and Bahawalpur Road. The Mughal garden is believed to have extended from Nawankot in the south, and extending towards Lahore city.Flooding from the Ravi river is believed to have destroyed most of the garden during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb. No traces of the once expansive garden survive aside from the Chauburji gate.

Chauburji was a Historical Land Mark in between the Lahore City, it was destroyed by Illiterate and Hippie people. It was very beautiful building, having four corners thats why called Chauburji. This is very Rushy Area In Lahore lot of traffic is moving around this building , there is no Traffic Signal nor any Traffic Police surveillance so thats why people dont follow the Traffic Rules all the Time.Punjab Government started a project to renew The Chauburji so when the project will complete The Chauburji will be looking Very beautiful and open for tourists.

It is actually the entrance gate of a garden build by mughals. Garden has been vanished long ago because of encroachments. Its name is drived as Chau (Persian) stands for four and Burj (Arabic) for tower. Since towers are small the term Burji is used as per local language terminology. About 50 years back one of its tower was ruined after an earthquake which was repaired later by the relevant government department.

It is a Mughal era monument in the city of Lahore, capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab. The monument was built in 1646 C.E. during the reign of the emperor Shah Jahan. It previously acted as a gateway to a large garden. The name Chauburji, which translates as four towers was likely given by later generations, as the original site was seen as a monumental gateway to an extensive garden in the Mughal Empire period. It is said that the attached garden might not have survived due to river flooding in the area of.The establishment of this garden is often attributed to Mughal  Princess Zeb-un-Nisa, who is believed to be referenced in an inscription naming her Sahib-e-Zebinda Begam-e-Dauran. The princess was eight years old at the time of construction. No traces of the once expansive garden survive aside from the Chauburji gate.During a severe earthquake in 1846, the north-western minaret collapsed and cracks appeared in the central arch. This has however been restored as much as was reasonably possible and the gateway now looks quite as it might have been during the time of its Mughal patroness. The restoration was carried out by the Department of Archeology, Government of Pakistan in the late 1960s.Chauburji is built in a syncretic style that blends Mughal architecture, the older Timurid-style from Central Asia, and Perso-Arabic styles from the Middle East. Its distinguishing features are the minarets which greatly widen at the top - a unique feature not present anywhere in the sub-continent. Some, however, believe that there were cupolas upon these minarets which collapsed with the passage of time. The eastern and western facades of the structure are decorated by two-storey Timurid-style iwans flanked by two levels of alcoves in a style typical of the Shah Jehan period of Mughal architecture. The building was once covered in intricate blue and green kashi kari (or Kashan-style) tile work and frescoes. The aiwans are embellished with muqarnas, which were first introduced into the Mughal Empire from Persia with construction of Lahores Wazir Khan Mosque.

The Chauburji gate is the only remnant of a large garden that has all but disappeared. It now stands alone in a grassy roundabout at the intersection of Multan Road and Bhawalpur Road. There is considerable uncertainty regarding who constructed it. An inscription on the monument gives the date 1056 AH (1646) and attributes it to Sahib-e-Zebinda Begam-e-Dauran. According to the 19th century historian Syad Muhammad Latif, the full inscription reads:This garden, in the pattern of the garden of paradise, has been founded...(the second line has been effaced)The garden has been bestowed on Mian BaiBy the bounty of Zebinda Begam, the lady of the age.Latif believed that Mian Bai was the favorite female attendent of Zebina Begam. He recounts a story from the Shah Jahan-nama that the garden was laid out on the orders of Zebina Begam with direct supervision delegated to a Mian Bai. As the princess approached the garden as it neared completion, she heard people saying that the princess was on her way to visit Mian Bais garden. Seeing that the garden was already being described as Mian Bais garden, the princess resolved to make a gift of it to Mian Bai. When she reached the garden, Mian Bai came forward and prayed for the princesss long life. Zebina Begam took this as a positive omen and immediately bequeathed the garden to Mian Bai.Regardless of the storys truth, Latif may not be correct in assuming that the Zebinda Begam inscribed on the Chauburji refers to Zeb-un-Nisa, the daughter of Emperor Aurangzeb. Zeb-un-Nisa was born in 1637, so it is unlikely that she was given command of sufficient resources to construct a garden at the age of eight. A better candidate is Zeb-un-Nisas aunt, Jahan Ara Begam, one of Shah Jahans daughters. The very word Chauburji, meaning Four Towers in Urdu, is likely a modern term for what would have been merely a monumental gateway to the vast garden at the site in the Mughal era. Due to flooding and neglect, the garden may not have long survived its completion. By the 19th century the monument was somewhat dilapidated, having lost its northwest tower to an earthquake in 1846. In the 1960s the Department of Archaeology supervised the reconstruction of the destroyed tower and also restored the surviving parts of the monument. The design of the minarets with their distinctive flairing capitals is a stylistic variant found only in Lahore.
