Totally obscure by tall buildings and busy shops of Anarkalis Aibak Road, this is a beautiful structure on North-West side of Mausoleum of Sultan Qutab-ud-Din Aibak. It can be seen while standing in Garden on western side of Mausoleum. As with many other temples, some families are living there and access to tourists is not allowed. Even the entrance and access to building is totally unknown. Ground floor is all small shops.

This exquisite temple is located in Anarkali bazaar very close to the tomb of Qutb-ud-Din Aibak. As with most HinduBansi Mandir buildings in Lahore, there is a paucity of information about this building. It is a privately owned building and at my visit to the site, I was able to meet the owner but unfortunately he did not know any historical information about the building either. It was somewhat unique that the building being of Hindu origin, in the predominantly Muslim country of Pakistan, is owned by a person who told me that he is a Pakistani Jew.The mandir itself is located within the courtyard of a massive haveli. At present, portions are rented out to various tenants and even the main building of the mandir is used as a home by one of the number of families here. This building would have been built during the colonial period by a prosperous family wanting to expand out of the congested walled city. Kanhaiya Lal and Latif dont mention it in their descriptions of Anarkali so it must have been built or completed after the 1890s. The façade is a long one and lines the Anarkali bazaar. The decorative features on the main façade are broadly European but the central section has a traditional arch framed by pillars and contains an elaborate jharoka above the entrance. The wooden jharoka or balcony with its fine woodwork is still in good state of preservation. The stairs lead up to the courtyard, in the center of which is located the fine temple with plaster mouldings. The owner informed me that parts of the building were damaged by an angry mob in the riots following the destruction of Babri Mosque in India.

It makes me really sad to see how we in Pakistan doesn’t care about anything non- Islamic . We really have no respect for our culture and ancestors.I used walk past by it almost every other dad in my way to college but just saw it as an ancient ruin. More I know about my history more sensitive I become about the cultural / religious diversity of undivided India.Budha said thar what was once divided will be united and what was united united will be divided. We must protect these temples at all cost. It’s who we we all were in south Asia out of respect for our ancestors and future generations .

Bansi means Flute, one of the most melodious musical instruments. Bhagwan Sri Krishna used to charm all creatures of nature by the tunes of his Bansi. Hindu temples bring positive energy and peace. This entire town and its residents were Hindus until they were forcefully converted. All Lahore residents have Hindu heritage in their blood. If Pakistan restores these divine and holy places and allows its citizens to learn about the disciplined and life loving Hindu lifestyle, it will be blessed with much needed peace and prosperity.Om Namah Shivay
