Good selection, very well stocked. Friendly staff who made sure we were attended to. Just slightly more expensive than normal, though for those with the money should be good. Very well organized, though dont have the vest my friend was looking for.

I went by today since I want to learn cross country skiing, Chip helped me, I have to say he was beyond helpful, he explained to me what I should look for in skis, length, width and even did a flex test to the skis he recommended for me. He was patient, and kind while providing such detailed information for me to understand the product and the reason why he was recommending that specific product. I am definitely going back.

Review №6

The worst place ever. Both times I went within the same week I got the worst help and had the worst experience ever. They don’t really seem to care about helping some and more eager to help others. They don’t ask any questions like they should when helping someone, and they lack a drive to help those who really need it. If I could I would give them zero stars.

Service was fine. However thr boots and skates I purchased didn’t end up working for me. I tried to return and was told they do not “do” returns. I spent almost $400 and now I am reduced to selling on FB. I went to AMH to support a local business. However is this is an example of service and satisfaction I will take my business back to REI.

I cant think of a better local shop than Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking. For almost 50 years, AMH has served the nordic skiing, hiking, climbing and human-powered adventure community with grace and kindness. From funding ski races, giving discounts to young racers and donating prizes to practically every event, they always go the extra mile to support local events. In the shop, their staff is extremely knowledgeable and kind without being pushy. AMH carries high end clothing and gear, but their prices are never marked up more than any other big box store. Plus, they always have a sale rack and several big sales a year where you can score current gear at major discounts. The ski wizards downstairs are always quick to turn around any gear repair...I dont know how they do it!Shop local, support the little guy, and pet the numerous shop dogs who are always roaming around the racks waiting for some attention.

What a great local store. I’m not a crazy athletic hiking up a mountain in winter person. That being said I wanted to get out on icy trails and be safe. The kind and informative people here can set you up with crampons for your winter boots that will make sure you have a great hike and don’t fall. Highly recommend the friendly people here

I visit these guys for my major mountaineering needs, friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful staff. If your a serious climber, various alpine activities, trekker, etc or are planning an expedition in the back country, Alaska range, Denali, etc these are the guys to call/visit...prices are right on mark and they run some decent sales. Check them out great folks that have treated me right so no hesitation recommending them.

AMH is THE place to go in Alaska for nordic ski, nordic skate, backcountry ski, and mountaineering gear. I run into their employees regularly at backcountry huts and other far-flung locations in Alaska. Staff are friendly, experienced, knowledgeable, and focused on giving back to the outdoor community. Last winter they even replaced one of my nordic skate bindings for free with spare parts after I broke it in a fall through the ice. 100% recommended.

Their customer service was very bad, they had three people helping one person. Also the skis I got waxed were waxed wrong they are combi skis being used for skate mostly but waxed as classic. Plus they seemed very scattered and disorganized. They use to be the best in town, but now it seems like they just dont care at all.

Quality merchandise and good advise on what to buy.My 14-year olds experience with salesperson named Emily was the best and very helpful in all ways.In the long run, its a good place, but the sales guy I had felt the need to keep reminding me that I was too overweight to consider cross-country skiing. He left me with a bad feeling. Im not out to be a racer, but just to keep within a reasonable distance of my kids.In sales, they say that Sampson slew Goliath with a sling made from the jawbone of an ass: thousands of sales are lost every day with the same instrument. Its just one guy so Ill go back.

A old school locally-owned and operated outdoor gear store. Skip REI and shop here, not as many soft goods, but much better hard goods. A curated selection picked by locals, not corporates in the lower 48. I just wish they could carry even more bc touring ski gear, but I guess xc nordic nerds need a store too.

(this review was written on behalf of my spouse)January 6, 2017 i bought a pair of backcountry skis, bindings, boots and goggles from AMH. We live 250 mile round-trip from AMH so skis were left for binding install. Was told to leave one boot and take the other with as they did not want it around the storeCame back to get skis and was told they need both boots. Left and sent other boot back by mail. Two weeks later took skis home and when adjusting heel release (DIN) found, after consulting specs on the internet that i needed the next lower level Marker binding. Returned skis for appropriate binding. When i asked why i was not sold the appropriate binding the sales person replied that i should have looked at the chart on the wall.Later, i noticed that the low-light lens for goggles was wrong lens.March 7, i was notified the skis were ready. AMH refused to pay for shipping or to use a courier service.Spouse picked up skis on March 20 and returned a low-light goggle lens in exchange for the correct lens. The exchange lens was also incorrect so it was returned for a refund and the correct lens will be gotten from a more competent store.

One of the best gear stores in the nation. By far. Without a doubt. Their product selection is excellent. Truly excellent. They carry many of the best in class products in a wide variety of categories--from ice screws to down parkas to backcountry ski bindings--as well as products from a wide variety of premium brands. Based on my five or so visits over the last year, Ive found that about half of their employees are very knowledgable, i.e. experts, and the other half are above average e.g. better than 99% of the REI retail employees Ive interacted with.
