Very historical place, but needs to be upgraded and the approaching way must be made clear to public. Most of Multani people even don’t know about this place. The underground room has been closed which must have been kept open!!!Anyway an ancient place with so much unique features of being an unroofed mosque and having historical graves in it

By Rehan Saeed:Multan has variety of mosques mostly known as tomb-mosques and Sawi Mosque is one of those rich architectural assets of Multan. We may not find the exact date of this mosque but keeping its architecture and research by historians, I may suggest its construction period is 16th century during or after Akbar. This old Sawi mosque is situated in Kotla Taulay Khan of Multan. This name of town is associated with birth place of one of the Tughlaq rulers named as Tughlaq Khan. The architect of the mosque is built by bricks having geomatrical work, blue tiles, caligraphy and petsian inscriptions on Mirhab and graves in courtyard. The door jambs and steps have been influenced to some degree by Hindu influence with a relational possibility of Tughlaq influence. The grave in the middle of the sahn is having a mihrab on its head. According to Dr. Shaukat Mahmood, It has a large marble katabah or tombstone carrying the epitaph. The slab is fixed on the head side and bears a long inscription in nastaliq style on both sides in Persian verse. The inscription tells us of one Safar Quli who died on the tenth of Sha’ban 999 hijra. Surprisingly, on the back of this slab the name of the month is not given, instead it says shahoor i.e. months and the date given in wourds is tis’a o alif i.e. 1009 Hijra while in numerical it remains 999. Probably Safar Quli died in the year 999 and someone by the name of Zakariyya bin Ustad Muhammed, son of Jeevan composed the verses and installed the slab in 1009 A.H. the name of the poet appears in the last couplet.

A really old mosque belong to the Qureshi family of Multan descendents of mughal emperor of subcontinent. This mosque is in real bad condition and is not restored yet but hertitage department of pakistan.Yet this is a must visit place to eye witness the architectural desgin and the calligraphic designs on walls of sawi masjid. But to find the exact location of this mosque you must have a local with you. As this is situated within the old city with narrow streets and grid of lot of residencial streets around the mosque.
