The origins of Mankera according to tradition go back one thousand years BC, it is believed that Mankera was originally Malkherkot, founded by a Rajput called Mal Khera. There is evidence that suggests that a state by this name existed during Alexanders invasion of the sub-continent. The Arabs however called it Manker Kot, and during Muhammad bin Qasims rule in greater Sindh, the conquest of Mankera by one of his generals, Abul Asswad bin Zahar is recorded. The first Muslim governor of Mankera was Ahmed bin Khuzema who died in Mankera and is buried in Mankera fort.

The fort is gone, just some dirt walls remaining. There are a lot of people residing and most of it has been replaced by houses. Some govt. buildings are also in the fort area. The remains of the fort are also disappearing day by day.

These ruins could change this place by tourism. But any political person did not pay any attention for its conservation. This should be the fate of nation who did not care its heritage. As people were illiterate and knew nothing about its value. Not only these ruins there were also amazing things in fort like temple, old Nawabs mosque etc.

The historical Fort in the heart of Thal criminally neglected by Authorities. The fort has an ancient history. Elexander the Great, Jalal ud din Khwarzam Shah and Mohammed bin Qasim have invaded and conquerred it.Balochs have ruled the greater Thal from this strong fort. Abdul Nabi Kalohra from Sindh and the Afghan Sarbuland Khan ruled here for some time. Finally it was conquerred by insatiable Ranjeet Sing of Punjab conquerred it in his third attempt in 1821 and the Mankera state was annexed in Greater Punjab.
