The area was earlier known as Donald Town, which was named after Donald McLeod, who was later to become the lieutenant governor of the Punjab (1865–70), and after whom, people even today, call McLeod Road. He was earlier the president of the Lahore Improvement Committee, which then became the Lahore Improvement Trust, later to be renamed the Lahore Development Authority. However, the term Charing Cross was first used in the context of Lahore, in 1908 in a publication by G.R. Elmslie titled “Thirty Five Years in the Punjab” (1908, Edinburgh). A 1918-19 ‘B&R Report’ refers to it as the ‘Charing Cross Scheme’.

The busiest square at mall road. The square have some historical importance. At it one side there is a building once named free masson hall niw its a chief minister office

The monument park is restricted to public visits in general. Even if you got inside the underground museum has nice artifacts from various countries but cleaning conditions are not good. You need to have special permission to visit(most probably that will work).

The most important and famous chowk on mall road lahore. Now a days its called Faisal Chowk. This Chowk is surrounded with historical buildings for example Punjab Assembly Building with its all grandeur of Italian architecture where destiny of the people of punjab is decided through their representatives. The Fallettis Hotel where QA Muhammad Ali Jinnah stayed there and the same room has been declred as Museum although the the has been leased out to a businessman. Another grand buildng is Wapda House standing with its all beauty and architectural design which is the head office of Wapda. Avari hotel in past it was Hotel Hilton is located. This hotel is also too beautiful architectural design is suplended and beautiful oppsite hotel lahore zoo and adjacent to it opposite wapda house 92 the Mall in the corner of chowk is located which is under use of Punjab Government but its still belonging of queen Elizabeth of Britain. On the other corner another historical building Shah Din Manzil is located and opposite to it across the Mall Alfalah building is standing which is not too old but it is the start of construction of big buildings in Lahore. The most important and historic Monument and symbol of Union of Muslim Ummah and the struggle of Mr. Bhutto to unite islamic world and to make pakistan again a strong state of islamic world after separation of East Pakistan with the name and style of Bangla Desh. A Minar and another Monument where Quran Pak has been preserved a park and a mini museum all are so important proofs of 1974s Islamic heads Conference held in Lahore and great muslim leaders attended the same.Another importance of this chowk/ Square is that it is used by different segments of society to get record their protests in favour of their demands to draw the attention of Governmemt for the redressal of their grievances. This is also used by political parties for agitation and civil societys protests for drawing authorities attention on issues.
