Iqbal was one of the major inspirations behind the Pakistan Movement, and is revered in Pakistan as Muffakir-e-Pakistan (The Thinker of Pakistan) or Shair-e-Mashriq (The Poet of the East). Iqbal died on 21 April 1938 in Lahore at the age of 60. Thousands of visitors come to the mausoleum every day to pay their respects to the poet-philosopher. It is said that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk sent earth collected from Maulana Rumis tomb to be sprinkled on this grave.Soon after Iqbals death in April 1938, a committee was formed that was presided over by Chaudhary Mohammed Hussain.[4]A major problem in the realisation of this monument was a lack adequate funds. The committee resolved not to accept any donations from the local governments and state rulers, and so funds were raised through the contributions from Iqbals friends, admirers and disciples. The architecture has a combination of styles however it reflects mainly the Mughal style. The structure is entirely constructed of red sandstone,[6] which was brought from Jaipur, British India, and building marble from Makrana, Rajputana. After the independence of Pakistan in 1947, construction was affected due to export restrictions of red stone from India. Six couplets of a ghazal are carved from Iqbals poetical work Zabur-e-Ajam (Persian Psalms) on the mausoleums interior surfaces. Outside, there is a small garden, distributed into small plots. The mausoleum was designed by Hyderabad Deccans then Chief Architect, Nawab Zain Yar Jang Bahadur and took thirteen years to build at a cost of about one hundred thousand (Rs. 100,000) Pakistani rupees. The major reason for delay was the stoppage of red-stone from Jaipur in post-independence India. The rectangular mausoleum has two gates at the eastern and southern side respectively, inlaid with marble, while the cenotaph itself is made of white marble. The tombstone was a gift from the people of Afghanistan,[citation needed] and is made of lapis lazuli and inscribed with Quranic verses in calligraphy inscribed in Afghanistan. The tomb complex is listed on the Protected Heritage Monuments of the Archaeology Department of Punjab.

Serene environment adds on to the spell. But this place is very small for such a huge personality. It seems like a secondary place to visit when someone is there to visit Badshahi mosque or Shahi Qila. He deserved his own piece of land, where visitors would have been there to visit him only.War on terror added another difficulty for visitors. Regular visitors are not allowed to visit this Tomb, they are not allowed past a barrier in front of Badshahi mosque. It looks like Iqbal is not allowed to meet someone, and he is in some sort of House arrest.I have been prevented several times from visiting his Tomb. Each time, I tried to talk to guards but was refused. Once, after so much of disappointment and frustration, I set aside all the rules and climbed that barrier in front of Badshahi mosque. Guards came running towards me but I managed to reach door of the Tomb. They caught me there but then allowed me few minutes after little bit of interrogation.I didnt tried this adventure next time. And just prayed for early release of Iqbal from this House arrest.Dont visit this place because you will not be allowed past that barrier in front of Badshahi mosque.

Allama Iqbals TombOutside the Badshahi Mosque in the Hazuri Bagh on the southeast of the main gateway of Badshahi Mosque stands the imposing tomb of Allama Iqbal, Pakistans national poet. It took thirteen years to complete. It was designed by Nawab Zain Yar Jang Bahadur, the chief architect of Hyderabad Deccan.Soon after the death of the poet in 1938, the Iqbal Tomb Committee, presided over by the late Chaudhry Muhammad Hussain, approached eminent architects to design the tomb, but they were dissatisfied with the results. The president expressed a desire that the monument, like Lahores great works of Mughal architecture, should aim at the expression in stone of the self. The committee was of the opinion that the designer, instead of copying architectural models of the Mughal period, should derive inspiration from Afghan interpretations of Moorish architecture. Consequently, the present design, a mixture of Afghan and Moorish architecture, was approved by the committee. Many difficulties had to be overcome before the actual construction was begun. The British government delayed approval of the project. Then, funds had to be raised from contributions from the poets friends, disciples, and admirers. Construction halted for a long time after Independence, when the import of red sandstone from Jaipur and marble from Makrana in Rajputana (India) was temporarily stopped. The mausoleum has two gates with teak frames inlaid with marble. The taweez of the tomb, done in lapis lazuli, the most expensive architectural stone in Afghanistan, is a gift from the Afghan government. On the inside walls of the mausoleum are written six couplets of a ghazal of the poet from Zabur-e-Ajam which epitomize the message of Iqbal.

Sir Muhammad Iqbal, also known as Allama Iqbal was a philosopher, poet and politician in British India who was born on 9 November 1877 and died on 21th April 1938. He is considered one of the most important figures in Urdu literature, with literary work in both Urdu and Persian languages.he was also called as Muslim philosophical thinker of modern times. Iqbal is known as Shair-e-Mushriq meaning Poet of the East. He is also called Muffakir-e-Pakistan (“The Inceptor of Pakistan”) and Hakeem-ul-Ummat (“The Sage of the Ummah”). In Iran and Afghanistan he is famous as Iqbāl-e Lāhorī or Iqbal of Lahore, and he is most appreciated for his Persian work. Pakistan Government had recognised him as its “national poet.He has different literary and narrative works. His first poetry book, Asrar-e-Khudi, appeared in the Persian language in 1915, and other books of poetry include Rumuz-i-Bekhudi, Payam-i-Mashriq and Zabur-i-Ajam. Amongst these his best known Urdu works are Bang-i-Dara, Bal-i-Jibril, Zarb-i Kalim and a part of Armughan-e-Hijaz and also Pas che bayad kard.he had series of lectures in different educational institutions that were later on published by Oxford press as ‘’the Reconstruction of Islamic religious thoughts in Islam’’. Iqbal was influenced by the teachings of Sir Thomas Arnold, his philosophy teacher at Government college Lahore, Arnold’s teachings determined Iqbal to pursue higher education in West. In 1905, he traveled to England for his higher education. Iqbal qualified for a scholarship from Trinity College in Cambridge and obtained Bachelor of Arts in 1906, and in the same year he was called to the bar as a barrister from Lincoln’s Inn. In 1907, Iqbal moved to Germany to study doctorate and earned PhD degree from the Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich in 1908. Working under the guidance of Friedrich Hommel, Iqbal published his doctoral thesis in 1908 entitled: The Development of Metaphysics in Persia. During his study in Europe, Iqbal began to write poetry in Persian. He prioritized it because he believed he had found an easy way to express his thoughts. He would write continuously in Persian throughout his life. Iqbal, after completing his Master of Arts degree in 1899, initiated his career as a reader of Arabic at Oriental College and shortly was selected as a junior professor of philosophy at Government College Lahore, where he had also been a stundent; Iqbal worked there until he left for England in 1905. In 1908, Iqbal returned from England and joined again the same college as a professor of philosophy and English literature. AtThe poetry and philosophy of Mawlana Rumi bore the deepest influence on Iqbal’s mind. Deeply grounded in religion since childhood, Iqbal began intensely concentrating on the study of Islam, the culture and history of Islamic civilization and its political future, , who said that Iqbal’s beliefs had “universal appeal”.In his Soviet biography N. P. Anikoy wrote, “(Iqbal is) great for his passionate condemnation of weak will and passiveness, his angry protest against inequality, discrimination and oppression in all forms i.e., economic, social, political, national, racial, religious, etc., his preaching of optimism, an active attitude towards life and man’s high purpose in the world, in a word, he is great for his assertion of the noble ideals and principles of humanism, democracy, peace and friendship

The Tomb of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, or Mazaar-e-Iqbal (Urdu: مزار اقبال‬‎) is a mausoleum located within the Hazuri Bagh, in the Pakistani city of Lahore, capital of Punjab province.Soon after Iqbals death in April 1938, a committee was formed that was presided over by Chaudhary Mohammed Hussain.[4] The initial round of the designs submitted by distinguished architects was not satisfactory. The committee suggested to innovate a new combination rather than following a specific school of architecture. The final design, thus, broke away from Mughal tradition and comprised a combination of Afghan and Moorish architecture.A major problem in the realisation of this monument was a lack adequate funds. The committee resolved not to accept any donations from the local governments and state rulers, and so funds were raised through the contributions from Iqbals friends, admirers and disciples.[
