A historical mosque usually missed by tourists. Its name means, mosque that was constructed in one night.Before partetion, Muslims wanted to construct a mosque here but Hindus living all around were not letting them do so. So one night, determined Muslims constructed the mosque in one night while Hindus were sleeping at night. Though at that time, it was a very basiccdmall mosque and a double storey mosque was constructed much later on.This is the mosque that our nation poet Allama Iqbal has referred in his peom Masjid tau bana dee shab bhar mein, emaan kee hararat walon ney

A beautiful small Masjid constructed in one night.

This is a small but beautiful historical mosque in the heart of Lahore (Old Lahore) that came to be during a dispute between the local populouse in 1917.Just when World War 1 was raging on, in the Indian Sub continent the locals of then lahore, divided in to two groups i.e Hindus and Muslims were fighting over a small piece of land where now this mosque stands. To win over the dispute of land, the mosque was built by muslims in a single night. Thus giving it the peculiar name.

History of this mosque is interesting. Though its location is at prime crossing of markets at main circular road and is usually congested due to traffic but its worth visiting. The place needs renovation and attention of Govts tourism people.

Shab Bhar Masjid (overnight Mosque مسجد شب بھر) is an historical place near Shah Alami chowk Lahore. This mosque was built overnight by wonderful action in 1917 after a Muslims dispute with local Hindus. This was Quiad-e-Azam who undertook legal procedure brought into reality by local muslims possible on legal grounds and mosque was built overnight and Hindus could do nothing of this wonderful construction because this action was supported by court of law at that time.

A mosque which is said to be built in one night and famously called Masjid Shab Bhar though its name is Masjid-e-Shaheed. Praying and ablution areas are at first floor only. Ground floor has toilets and shops. The ceiling of the mosque has traditional glass pitchi kari work though some of that needs urgent maintenance.

Masjid To Bna Di Shab Bhar Mein Emaan Ki Hararat Walon Nay.Mann Apna Purana Paapi Tha Barson Say Nmazi Ban Na Saka.This famous couplet was written in 1917 for this historical mosque located at Shahalmi Chowk at the entrance of Shah Alam Gate (named after Emperor Shah Alam, third son of Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb Alamgir. Gate was completely burnt during riots at the time of partition of India in 1947. Although this area was later rebuilt and modernized but gate was never built again.Before partition, Shah Alami Bazar was populated by different communities like Hindus, Afghans, Sikhs and Muslims but Hindus were in majority. At the entrance of the gate, there was 3 marlas plot unoccupied. Once a Muslim trespasser offered Namaz at this disputed land and resultantly, tension between Hindus and Muslims increased. Hindus wanted to build a temple and Muslims were adamant to have a mosque at this very place. Tussle aggravated and case was heard in Lahore court in front of British judge who decided to personally visit the place next day and give decision afterwards.During British Raaj, nothing could be built over disputed land but at the same time no religious buildings were to be harmed or destroyed according to law. A sharp minded Muslim Lawyer ( Of course Muhammad Ali Jinnah) advised Muslims to construct a mosque overnight before judges proposed visit. Muslims were left with no option. Under the leadership of World Champion Wrestler, Gama Pehlwan, Muslims started building mosque. All the Muslims of this area including Children & Females took part with zeal and zest. Even, material like woods and bricks were also given by Muslims without any cost. With their sole Islamic enthusiasm, this marvel was erected over one single night.When judge visited the place, he was astonished to see a mosque instead. He had to give decision in favour of Muslims. This mosque still reminds us how important it was to have an independent Muslim country.Although original material and design of mosque is changed and area is also encroached by shops but it still stands to recall the love and passion about Islam.Three days after its construction, Allama Muhammad Iqbal visited this place and said famous couplet:مسجد تو بنا دی شب بھر میں ایماں کی حرارت والوں نےمن اپنا پرانا پاپی تھا برسوں میں نمازی بن نہ سکاIf you want to visit and offer prayer in this mosque, you will have to creep through congested area of busy traffic but, after all, it holds history in it, so traffic should not be a problem in our minds. Upon our visit, I was surprised to notice that we were not allowed to park our ride and armed guards on both sides of the mosque told us that area is still disputed. Anyways, easy way to reach is to hire a Rickshaw from Mayo Hospital or Data Darbar because its not very far from them.
