Aitchison College is situated on the Mall Road in the heart of Lahore, shouldering Lahore Canal on one side and Mayo Gardens on the other. Formed in 1886, it is often known as the Eton of Pakistan. And elite school for the elite of Pakistan, the school is like a British enclave. However, for tourism purposes it is not a destination. Due to the security situation in Pakistan, entrance in the premises is very difficult even for the alumni. So this should be off-the-cards for a tourist.Aitchison college is one of Pakistan’s largest schools. The campus is huge with lush green lawns. Not open for general public, but you can visit if you have a child that studies there; granted you have the access sticker on your car. This school has been a mentor for many notable figures and politicians e.g. Imran Khan, Farooq Leghari, Yousaf Salahuddin, Amazon Sadiq and many more.......

My point of view for this college is that its the best in Pakistan . Its students are so educated and respectful. And the environment it provides isnt provided anywhere else in Pakistan. And its evergreen and Unstoppable legacy is the main reason for its success . It has given pakistan , many politicians like Imran Khan , Shah Mehmood qureshi and Tareen .

Aitchison College, by name, was established by the British as an elite institution with the objective of educating the relatives of the Ruling Chiefs of the Punjab, youths of good family, and the minors under the guardianship of the Court of Wards. Because of its seamless connection with the Wards College of Umballa, we are able to date our foundation back to 1868 when the original school provided Mr. Walter Robinson as Aitchison Colleges first principal and we received boys from that school. Reaffirming this Sir Charles Aitchison declared at the 1886 opening: ..the institution was the outcome of proposals which had been under consideration since 1864, and which had been partially realised since the establishment of the Wards School at Umballa.Originally named as Punjab Chief’s College on 2nd January 1886, its foundation stone at the current site was laid on 3rd November, 1886, by the Viceroy Earl of Dufferin and Ava, in the presence of a very large and representative assemblage, European and Native, including the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, the Countess of Dufferin, Sir Charles Aitchison, the Lieut. Governor of the Province and many of the Ruling Chiefs of the Province. Some days later on 13th November, 1886, it was renamed Aitchison College, thus honouring the services of Sir Charles Umpherston Aitchison through whose efforts the College was established.

I know how challenging it is just running a small centre like ours and appreciate the enormous effort put in by many people in centres and the organisation worldwide.I watched the first BP module and found it incredible that this quality of teaching is available even when you don’t have a teacher. It takes huge effort to organise educational programmes such as those we have available to us. There is a need to continue to develop, but how wonderful we have teachers of the calibre of our Senior Sangha and Geshes and their wisdom available to us as resident and visiting teachers and through the Online Learning Centre.I look forward to seeing what comes in the future and hope I’m around in this life long enough to connect with even a small portion of what’s already on offer.

Aitchison College’s iconic Old Building, designed and built by Sir Ganga Ram, is quintessential Lahore of old, with the power to take its beholders on a trip through time and thoughts of great past students who had graced the school. While keeping in mind past glory, students are encouraged to strive and shape a better future for themselves and their fellowman.

Review №30

I used to study here. Theres mediocre academics and stuff, some of the teachers arent too intelligent, campus is pretty beautiful, but the culture inside is toxic, drug-filled, and idiotic. Students are elitists, not elite. Theyre overly patriotic, and take school spirit to an extreme, to the point that theyre hostile towards even the slightest of criticism to the institution. And, sadly, that sort of mentality is encouraged. Dont misinterpret this, there IS stuff to like about the place, like the campus and the co-curriculars. But the toxic, undisciplined, elitist, and often even racist mentality of the students, the fact that drugs exist inside, and the lack of any sort of creature comforts for students-- like lockers, air conditioning in classes, and tables and chairs that arent 100 years old and just repainted each semester, make it less-than-perfect. The school extorts students with ridiculously high fees, and put none of it into the students. The teachers and staff are paid by the government, the buildings are built on donations from over-patriotic old-boys, and no money is put into important things like tables for people. An estimated few billion rupees is made in profits AFTER deducting estimated costs, and nobody knows where it goes. Just a bit of negativity to counteract the patriotically-fueled plethora of positive reviews, and give another point of view.

Almost 90% of boys who graduate study overseas for their bachelor program with many gaining entry to the worlds top universities. The institute is the only Cambridge Examination Centre situated in a school. Aitchison College is a member of G20 Schools of the World and is recognised as the leader of education in Pakistan. On November 13, 1886, a few days after the foundation stone of Chiefs College was laid, the school was renamed Aitchison College. Construction of the main building, now known as Old Building, began in 1887 and was finished in 1890, along with a gymnasium and a hospital. Soon after that, the main building became the center of academic life at Aitchison, moving classes away from their previous locations in the boarding houses and rented bungalows. Construction on other buildings continued as the school attracted more wards and princes.Several efforts were made to provide facilities for physical education. In 1896, a cricket pavilion was built, and work began on a polo field. A year later, training in cricket, football, field hockey, and tennis was started. Following Aitchisons win in local sports competitions, the Aitchison Challenge Cup was established to honor the best sportsmen each year. In 1905, ACOBA (Aitchison College Old Boys Association) was established to allow the alumni of the school to compete against the current students in an event that brought together the alumni each year. In 1907, Aitchison College started sending contingents of sports teams to compete with schools outside Lahore and was allowed to host contingents from other schools. Swimming facilities were developed in 1923 and the Rani of Mandi Cup was established to honor the best swimmer of the year. The sports system soon evolved as competitions between the houses began in 1928. Hockey and tennis courts were established in 1938.The school also offers several extra-curricular activities and awards. In the first half of the 20th century, the school began to offer awards to some of its top students, he most popular of which were those for best essay writer and best debater. Additionally, the first Rivaz medal for best leaving boy at Aitchison College was created in 1906. The school also first published Pioneer publication in 1936. The Prize Distribution Day ceremony, now known as Founders Day, held annually in May, was started in 1892. The Prize Distribution was later divided into two separate ceremonies: Founders Day Academics and Founders Day Sports. The school also has a history of providing religious education and housing. A mosque was constructed for religious education of Muslim students in 1900, and a Dharamsala was created in 1913. A separate Sikh mess was organized in 1907, followed by the creation of a separate kitchen for Halal food in 1938. A mandir was also constructed, which was later redesigned to hold the Principals office. Religious education was later made compulsory for Hindu and Sikh students. Until 1933, the school enforced a rule that separate boarding houses should exist for Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs.
