Founded in 1865 at a smaller location and opened in 1894 at its current location on The Mall in Lahore during the British colonial period, Lahore Museum is Pakistan’s most visited and famous museums and remains one of the major museums in South Asia. The museum, along with the Zamzama Gun located directly in front of the building, were made famous in the celebrated British novel Kim, written by Rudyard Kipling - whose father was one of the museum’s earliest curators. Great museum with an extensive collection. Super clean, lots of employees in every wing, admission is cheap (Rs 50 for adults, cheaper for kids and students, although the prices for foreigners are comparatively high- around $6 USD/Rs 1000). The building itself has some interesting history, and its Indo-Saracenic architectural style is quite beautiful.Collections are mainly centered around South Asian/regional history, and specifically Islamic South Asian history. Currently two exhibits (the prehistory of the region exhibit, and the Sikh exhibit) are closed, Im assuming for renovation. The only complaint I would have is that the lighting in some exhibits or in certain display cases was lacking. Whether it was because of a dead lightbulb, or because of no light bulbs at all, a couple parts of the museum/display cases were excessively dim. Also the adjacent gift shop and book store feel more like overpriced Pakistani bazaar stores where theyll probably try and overcharge you if youre clearly a foreigner, instead of it feeling like a proper museum-affiliated store with high standards and fixed reasonable prices. So a warning to foreigners who want to get some cultural souvenirs: dont let them overcharge you, dont be afraid to haggle a bit, and dont be afraid to walk out with nothing. You can always find somewhere cheaper elsewhere in the city anyways.Other than that, it was a wonderful and pretty museum with an extensive collection and clean, well kept grounds and gardens.

Very interesting place! There was a lot of stuff to see, different cultures, different eras, the contribution from everywhere into Pakistan and specifically into Lahore. Very informative and very interesting museum. The place is well maintained though its rather dimly lit. The one issue I had was that the different exhibits (arranged by culture) were not clearly chronological. It was hard to tell what came first, what came during each other, and what was the last thing before Lahore as we see it today. However, the building and its exhibits are certainly nice. The gift shop outside was a bit more generic and it would have been nice to care to the audience a bit and sell things more relevant to history, or recreations of pieces inside.

The most historical place I ever visited in my whole life. The museum is divided in different portions, each portion belongs to its own history such as Islamic Historical things, Buddhist, etc.The unique thing which I like most is the maintenance, beauty and cleanliness of the museum. It will be injustice if I did not mention the behaviour of museums employees. They way they guide me very polite and well mannered. From my side it is strongly recommended for families.I want to add one point here for local visitors.

Lahore Museum’s majestic red-brick building stands on Shahrahe-Quaid-e-Azam, previously known as the Mall. Blended with the old tradition of Mughal Architecture, Lahore Museum stands out among the structures built in Lahore during the British period (1849-1947). This building is home to the countrys largest and oldest collection of historical, cultural and artistic objects. Its collections of Gandhara sculpture, miniature paintings rare manuscripts and old coins are known throughout the world. Similarly, its treasure of modern paintings, arts and crafts and ethnology are a national heritage beyond comparison. These collections attract research scholars, students and tourists from all over the world and constitute a unique cross-section of the cultural history of the Subcontinent The history of areas outside the Subcontinent is also brought to life here-the Museum houses artefacts from many countries and regions such as Burma, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa.Amazing experience, must visit this heritage place. Thanks
