The Lahori Gate is located within Walled City of Lahore in (Lahore, Punjab) Pakistan. Lahori Gate is one of the 13 gates of the Walled City of Lahore. Being one of the oldest gates of the old city, Lahori Gate is also known as Lohari gate. According to some historians, the original (old) city of Lahore was originally located near Ichhra, and this gate opened towards that side. Hence the name, Lahori gate. The name also traces back its roots to the language of Urdu, in which, “Lohar” means Blacksmith. This could also be another reason behind naming it this way. However, there are no concrete evidences available that blacksmiths used to live or work here. The bazar inside Lohari gate is known as Lohari Mandi (Lohari Market) which is one of the oldest markets of South Asia. In the distant past, caravans and travelers coming from Multan used to enter the city from this gate. According to historians, behind Lohari Gate once stood a brick fort called Kacha Kot which was probably the first fortified city of Lahore founded by Malik Ayaz.During the Mughal rule, the two famous divisions of the Walled City, namely Guzar Bahar Khan and Guzar Machhi Hatta, were connected by this Gate. Unfortunately, during the anarchic rule of the 18th century, all the city gates, except Lohari Gate along with two other gates were walled up. The current building of Lohari gate was rebuilt in 1864 by Sir Robert Montgomery, the then Governor of Punjab. The Walled City of Lahore is a unique piece of land having matchless characteristics and panoramas that take away your breath and hold you mind for hours and hours. Anyone going into the city can never be bored because every turn, narrow street, chowk and a mohallah has its own story to tell and a marvellous setting. Walled City of Lahore, no doubt among the oldest settlements, is a cosmos of monuments, havelis, cuisines, bazaars, culture and traditions and all these features make it a living heritage museum. The name Lohari Gate sounds interesting and you must be thinking why it was named so? Like the case with most of the gates of the city of Lahore, myths are also associated with its name and historians have written different accounts about it. Some say that it was named Lahori because it faced the Ichhra or the original Hindu Lahore called Ichhra Lahore or Lohawar which was named after a Hindu God. Another account states that the gate was named so because of the blacksmiths and ironsmiths living in the area and thus it got popular as Lohari as the blacksmiths and the ironsmiths known as “Lohars” had their smithies inside the streets of this gate. To me, the second account seems more powerful because we still see ironsmiths inside this gate and Chowk Jhanda is still known for metal and iron workers.

It is located near purani anarkali, in front of urdu bazar, adjacent to optical market and 30 second walk from Main shah Alamgeer Market. It is an ever crowded place . Lohaari gate means the gate of blacksmiths. Lohaar means black smith in urdu. The blacksmiths used to work here. It was built during mughal empire along with other gates. An old entering gate to enter the walled city of lahore which was built in mughal empire. If you visit urdu bazar or shah alam market or medicine market you can see it . After passing through lohari gate there is a mosque also. The old lohari gate was destroyed during 1857 anarchist rule and later it was rebuilt in 1864 by sir Robert Montogmery.

Typical of old lahore. People who live there think this original rest of lahore are multiple village. They are right about it. Gate is just small section of city. Rest is just big bazar. Just opposite to this is new anarkali bazar, a police station and urdu bazar. Both side of this gate you can find bulk pharmaceutical market. When you enter gate you can go back in time. Some people are still proud of their heritage. Rest have fled to wealthy area. If you are think of visiting that place better fly by. Traffic can be problematic.
