The Hindu Gymkhana was established by the Seth Ramgopal Gourdhanandh Mohatta and the Hindu community in 1925 on a plot of 47,000 square yards. It was designed by Agha Ahmed Hussain. It was named Seth Ramgopal Goverdhandas Mohatta Hindu Gymkhana at that time. After the Independence, the Hindu Gymkhana was taken over by the Evacuee Trust Property Board. In 1978, about 60 per cent the land of Hindu Gymkhana was given to the Police Department and another 6000 square yards were given to the Federal Public Service Commission. Later, 3500 square yards were given to the Ali Garh Muslim University and another 400 square yards was allotted to Abdul Majeed Khan received almost of land as an allotment. Currently it has only 4,500 square yards of land compared to 47,000 square yards in 1925. The buildings condition deteriorated over the years, and it was almost demolished in 1984. It was protected by the intervention of the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan. In 2005, the Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf handed the building over to National Academy of Performing Arts The Hindu Gymkhana now houses Pakistans National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) and is run by its chief Zia Mohyeddin – a prominent stage and Pakistani television personality. This historic building is widely considered to be an architectural gem in Karachi and is protected under the Sindh Cultural Heritage Protection Act. Therefore, nobody is allowed to carry out new construction, repairs, renovations in this building without the approval of Karachi Building Control Authority and the Government of Sindh.Surprisingly a historical building like this had deteriorated due to lack of maintenance in the recent past and was going to be demolished in 1984 but the Heritage Foundation Pakistan back then intervened to save it.

Its a beautiful heritage building. Nice and clean envornement.HISTORYEstablished in 1925 a club for the Hindu upper classes who formed colonial-era Karachis commercial elite, the Hindu Gymkhana was the first public building in Karachi to adopt the Mughal-Revival architectural style. It currently houses the National Academy of Performing Arts.
Great place to go watch some quality theatre on the weekend. Saw a classic Urdu play here which was brilliantly produced. The building is beautiful and well preserved. I wish there was better parking options here but I used Shaheen Complex parking nearby at walking distance which was secure enough.
Went to see a play by Sunil Shankar, pretty awesome show. The hall was decently sized and the ambience of the place was good. Car parking may be an issue which is same in all of the area.
Lovely Place for Art lover wide space for Gatherings and fun with a open Cafe and parking is available and a old heritage building with beautiful architecture and amaizing lightning view of warm lamps its stars place most of the showbiz celebrities visit it and perform in National academy of performing art (NAPA) theater. The Hindu Gymkhana (Sindhi:هندو جمخانه; Urdu: ہندو جِمخانہ) is a colonial-era building located on Sarwar Shaheed Road in Karachi, Pakistan. Established in 1925 a club for the Hindu upper classes who formed colonial-era Karachis commercial elite, the Hindu Gymkhana was the first public building in Karachi to adopt the Mughal-Revival architectural style. It currently houses the National Academy of Performing Arts. The Hindu community and Seth Ramgopal Gourdhanandh Mohatta contributed money for construction of the building, which was completed in 1925.The buildings condition deteriorated over the years, and it was almost demolished in 1984. It was protected by the intervention of the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan. The Hindu Gymkhana now houses Pakistans National Academy of Performing Arts. The building was designed by architect Agha Ahmed Hussain, with a design based on the tomb of Itamad-ud-Daulah (1628) in Agra. The building is small in size and consists primarily of a hall and some smaller rooms used for administrative purposes. Stone for the 2-foot-thick (0.61 m) walls was acquired in Bijapur. The roof line is defined by delicate massing of cupolas and balustrades directly influenced by Akbars Fatehpur Sikri. The octagonal corner towers framing the projecting central jharoka are capped with chattris, highlighting the influence of Rajasthani Style of Palaces. Smaller chattris highlight the corners of the projecting porch that carry the drooping bangladar roof used in Emperor Akbars period. The projecting chajjas are supported by ornamental brackets. The cupolas of the chattris are reinforced concrete and the walls are dressed in Gizri stone. Some of the carved elements are of Jodhpur stone.
Came here to watch a play with my family. Absolutley loved it, they have a nice theatre, and a nice clean area overall. Building is well maintained
Beautiful place, love to see Zia Mayuddins office there
Other than being a spectacular colonial-era building, the Hindu Gymkhana is a sporty social club. It also hosts NAPA, or the National Academy of Performing Arts, an art school that also showcases plays for wider audiences. Check it out, whether it’s for a cup of tea in a vintage atmosphere or to attend a mesmerizing drama performance
Another from the less known Historic Places of Karachi... The mughal imperial construction... A Building still intact and telling a story from the British Rule times..
A good place to learn and watch the art of theatre.
Visited at morning time during 3rd week of September 2017. Security guards at gate did not allow us an entry saying that there was a case going on in the court about this place so public entry was stopped just for the sake of seeing it. Photo was also refused. I just sneak peeked, the structure was wonderful! Wish to visit it in detail when allowed.
