20 minutes from Gilgit city at the start of Kargah gorge is the rock carved statue of Lord Budha, locally known as Kargah Budha. The brown barren rock with lots of green trees at the base and a blue water stream gushing through the valley is a remarkable setting.The rock carved statue dates back to 7th century and unlike most other Budha carving that show Lord Budha in sitting pose, this one is a rare standing Budha. The area around is a good picnic site. This, along with the Kargah Gorge, is a must visit site in Gilgit city.

This place is on of the old archeological side situated in Gilgit Pakistan.it’s a beautiful place to visit. There is a history about this place and some local stories about Buddha. I strongly recommend to visit this place if u stop by Gilgit city. From city it’s takes 30 minutes to get to this place

Cool place at hearth Gilgit- Baltistan. This budah is Carved Budah about More then 30feat high on world hard rock called granite. And its bottom two brooks flow makes you mesmerizing

Kargha Buddha archaeological site located about 6 miles (9.7 km)outside of Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.It is a carved image of a large standing Buddha, some 50 feet high, in the cliff-face in Karghah Nala.The carving, which is in a style also found in Baltistan, probably dates to the 7th century.The image is surrounded by the holes for a wooden image house structure, which would have sheltered it from the weather.According to local legend, the figure is actually a man-eating giantess or witch (yakhshini or ya-chaani or yacheni) who terrorized the local residents and was ultimately pinned to the cliff by a pir (holy man) as punishment.But its obviously man created story.But only place to visit in Gilgat.

It was carved somewhere between 3rd and 4th century AD. It is located at a distance of about half an hour from the city of Gilgit. A beautiful place. A perfect place for meditation. A cool water stream is flowing at the location. So peaceful and living place one can imagine.

The Buddha was carved in the seventh century. The local legend about the Buddha tells of a man-devouring ogress, called Yakhshini who lived at Karghah. From the 3rd century to the 11th century, Gilgit was a Buddhist center. Nearby, about 400 metres (1,300 ft) upstream, a Buddhist monastery and three stupas containing Sanskrit manuscripts were excavated in 1931.Long before Islam was introduced in the region, the people used to practice Budhism or multiple forms of local pagan religions, including Shamanism. One symbol of the ancient Budhist era is the Budha statue located very close to Gilgit city, in the Kargah Valley. The sculpture of Budha is believed to have been constructed in the 3rd or 4th century A.D. Many similar symbols are scattered in different valleys, including Skardu and Diamer.
