We have been patients at this hospital and their clinics for more than 30 years. Something has changed. Since the new Michigan Medicine sign went up and University of Michigan Hospital sign came down, things have changed significantly. From diminished staff to 20 minute plus wait to just make an appointment it is obvious that cuts have been made that compromise the integrity of this institution. VERY SAD.Right down to getting a warm blanket, even the blanket warmers have been turned down. The blankets are barely even warm!! Sounds trivial? It seems to represent many many changes that aren’t patient friendly. I’m sure all in the name of saving money. The comfort and safety of the patients suffer.

We had an appointment on floor b1 reception e and the signage off the elevator did not have a reception area e on it. The walk from the parking structure to floor b1 reception e is about as far as you can walk at the University of Michigan. They should have an adore accessible to the public closer to reception e for b1. Thats not the only area people who are bringing handicap people across from the parking structure are not always well themselves. Also the all the doors at the U of M need to be handicapped accessible because when you try to open a door and push someone through in a wheelchair and the doors closes on you it hurts the patient and the chair and the person pushing the patient in the chair because the door continues to hit you as you walk by. this is the U of M theyre one of the greatest hospitals around but they cant afford handicap buttons in order for handicap people and their loved ones to get through the doors which are as heavy as they come. Also during the covet 19 epidemic people do not wish and have not been advised to touch door handles like we used to.

On April 20th 2019 I went in to have my baby... it was a terrible experience. I wanted to labor in water, and I gave that request months prior to and was told that if it was available I would get the room, I was told that the room wasn’t available and my mom being the inquisitive person that she is, walked through the floor and seen several water rooms available. Secondly, I made it clear I wanted to do everything in my power to get to the end, these doctors pushed and pushed me until I felt I had NO VOICE and no choice but to have a c section. Which I should’ve known better because 3 weeks prior to, i went in after getting into a finder binder, and they insisted I stay over night, around 1am a doctor barged in my room and insisted I sign emergency c section papers, I cried, they said that my baby’s heart rate was dropping, this is the same tactic they used the day I gave birth, and I feel because I was vulnerable and had taken a epidural I went with it, they never went inside to make sure, there is a machine they can put inside to make sure the baby’s heart rate is ok. They never gave me a second opinion and oddly enough the nurses would tell me everything looked good and the doctors and their students would come in telling me something else. As a black woman, I felt trapped, I felt they didn’t care for me like they should have and I feel that they pushed a c section on me that WAS NOT NECESSARY! I drove 45 mins every appointment because I thought I was picking the best hospital! That was a lie! And now I have a scar for the rest of my life for the carelessly and the eagerness of doctors for me to give birth! Please have your baby some where else! Where the doctors will do what’s in the best interest of your body and your baby. I have a beautiful baby boy but I learned first hand what they mean when they say doctors will tell you anything for their personal agenda!! They told me weeks before I needed a c section and I declined!!! I should’ve done the same! Do NOT USE THIS HOSPITAL to give birth!

I contracted a virus that left me a C4 quadriplegic and U of M diagnosed me in 1 and 1/2 days after being at another hospital for a week and they not know what was wrong with me. My diagnosis is called Transverse Myelitis, which is very rare and unknown by most doctors, but U of M diagnosed me and treated me, where I was able to stand and walk a short distance. Their therapist worked very hard to give you quality of life. They are awesome! They just run you in and out - no follow up or care during treatment. Go somewhere that cares - not U of M Medicine. I went for radiation treatment for cancer. Over a three week period of treatment I had serious adverse side effects and tried to get help from the doctor. I called and left messages, I left messages with the nurses, I spoke with the doctor on call. All promised someone would follow up with me to get me help and I never got a single call back. When I complained about the bill the Dr responded in 10 minutes. That tells me all I need to know - they are in it for the $$ and do not care about the individual patients.

The two stars are for the emergency room and their efforts. I don’t know what happened after that but it certainly isn’t health care. Summarily ignored. I honestly think it would’ve been hours before they knew if she had taken off AMA. The nurse kept coming in and asking my wife what she’s heard. The ego of the U of M hospital complex mirrors the university. The bureaucracy and paradigm of the U of M Medical Center is a disgraceful example, and the opposite, of how a professional medical entity should operate. The directions to the parking facility was the easiest part of our experience. After that, at every point from registering and signing for HIPPA access, to waiting in the ER for over 20 hours to be given a hospital room, and departments not on the same page with patient status, and on and on...TOO much to mention here. Not the level of professionalism, from administrators to doctors, I would expect from a place that is thought of as a top medical facility! This hospital was the worst experience i have ever had with any sort of medical care. They knew that the insurance we had was something that would cover everything they do so they took advantage of that and put the patient at a state where he was almost dead in one week, so much so that he went from being fit to immobile in 1 week. Certain doctors would ask questions like where would you like to die when hes completely stable and in condition where he is likely to make a full recovery. He went to get a second opinion and was told that he is fine and should only get better from here on out. Bottom line if you love whoever needs the medical attention do not take them here.

This review is about the University of Michigan Hospital. From what I observed, the high quality surgical and subspecialty care is let down by the poor patient care on the floor. I hope what I experienced as a family patient advocate and caregiver on the 4th floor neurology and stroke unit is an outlier - sadly outmoded- reminiscent of the 1980s: poor communication between nursing and techs across shifts; unaddressed patient needs requiring the family member to get involved; reactive medicine- no care planning - attending physician who never seemed to synthesize and summarize the patients complex needs and monitor progress; loud semiprivate rooms where personal, private, patient information is easily overheard; difficulty finding nurses when needed by call button; maintenance person walking into room to check on a ceiling unit while patient is on bedside commode. Again, I was flabbergasted that this is academic medicine. I will say that a notable exception to this pattern of poor quality care is the excellent PT and OT staff and services, and an occasional fantastic nurse. Come on Michigan- fix this place! Until then, my advice is this if you seek competent compassionate patient care for stroke - go elsewhere.

The only downfall is in the ER we did spend a lot of time sitting and waiting for answers or what was next. But hands down best hospital around!!

Extremely disappointed with my experience at UM hospital. My father is 51 years young and has stage 4 cancer. They said they could do nothing for him and asked him where he wanted to die, either at the hospital or at home. They made my father sick even though he was pretty healthy when he went into the ER. He went through depression and sadness throughout his experience, but now, he is undergoing chemotherapy at another hospital. Difference is, at UM hospital they gave my dad no hope what so ever, versus the hospital we currently attend now, gave my father hope and they were happy to treat him. My mistake was agreeing with him to come to UM hospital for a first opinion. Such a waste of time.

Really bad experience. Incompetent doctors. The nurses have more common sense and finally listened to my father in law that his hip hurt and took x-rays and found a fracture. First he spent three days in the emergency room, then two days of MRIs and other tests that didnt find anything. They would have sent him home with a fractured hip if it werent for one smart nurse.

1 is being generous. Please do your research before selecting this Medical Center. They will charge you outrageous amounts and treat you like a cockroach when you question anything. DO NOT give them more them a second thought. There are plenty of places out there that treat you like a human being and not just a money grab. I went as far to contact the President of the University and yet again, my concerns were brushed aside as a nuisance. They do not discuss anything with you regarding the procedures, costs other option, they only tell you that it is part of their policy that it has to be done. They expect people who have miscarriages to know all of the right questions at the time. If you dont, well then that is your fault. If you have insurance they will not work out any type of settlement with you, but if you dont they will. Seems like discrimination to me. Also seems fair that I pay $2,000 a month to ensure my family and then get hit with a $7500 invoice for our miscarriage. But hey, if I was saving that $2,000 a month and not paying for insurance then sure, no problem they will gladly work with me on costs.I could go on and on about how I was treated but I cannot waste any part of my life thinking about the horrible people that work with this institution and their horrible policies. I beg of you, save yourself from the grief and stay away from these pompous jerks.

Competent staff, extremely busy place. The wait times for any kind of procedure is horrendous. Regardless of what youre having done, plan to spend your day here. The staff isnt overly friendly, if they speak to you at all. Id much rather stay close to home with my local hospital, but you have to go where your Docs want you to.

My husband been temping for the Motts Hospital for months and they will not hire him. They secretly had a black person come to him to tell him they will not hire him because of his glasses that he have to see in because their white which is prescription and because he has a beard. In which is cleaned up very nicely my husband faithfully goes to the barber every week. But they wasnt even bold enough to even come to him theirselves. He is a very hard worker. So they say or do you just work the BLACK people to yall advantage and then just toss them to the curve. Mind you he has been trying to support his family of 6 including himself trying to work at a job that people hold in HIGH ESTEEM! Oh and I forgot a White person called my husband the HELP when my husband was just doing his job. The guy said they used to be happy when we use to just let them work in the plants. WOW Im sad not only because I feel like he is just being used but also for the fact that some white people are just still racist. Not all of them. U of M was # 1 in my book but I just dont know anymore. And before anyone say anything Im mostly white.

I went in for an operation to remove a spot on my face that was smaller than a pencil eraser that operation took about ten minutes. Than I had to have it closed I have received several bills over the months that has so many charges dozens opon dozens I couldn’t firgure out if my life depended on it you would think I had every organ in my body replaced . This place is ridicules I am going to be calling the state medical board and file a complaint and have it investigated I would not go back to these crooks if my life depended on it .i will also be contacting my Medicare that paid thousands of dollars and let them know and review this matter . I believe if they sold hat or socks the average price would be in the neighborhood of 4 of 5 thousand then try to add another 15vor 3 charges ranging from charges for ringing up the order to a courtesy charge for saying thank you etc.

As an alumna from University of Michigan I wish I could give a better review, but the care I have received the past four years has been subpar.1) In 2015, the incompetent ER doctor said that there was no sign of an ACL tear or fracture and let me walk out of the ER without crutches despite my broken leg, torn ACL graft, sprained MCL, and sheared off articular cartilage. I repeatedly told her that something was wrong.2) In 2016, the incompetent PA at UHS wanted to slice open my finger to find a missing stitch despite me showing him a picture of the two stitches in my finger. He was incredibly sexist and demeaning as well. He also went by doctor in the first floor of UHS which is a federal offense.3) In 2019, I was given the wrong knee brace and it took months and threats of legal action to get the correct brace (see my review for the terrible Orthotics and Prosthetic office).4) 2019, Michigan Medicine financial office cannot seem to contact BCN despite my repeat calls and messages. There are many other instances of poor care and downright rude customer service/clerks. However, I will say I have had a really great experience with my primary doctor and my orthopedic surgeon, PA and physical therapy team at MedSport. I wish the good parts of Michigan Medicine would outweigh the bad, but they dont.

I was treated well in the ER however once admitted to the hospital things rapidly declined. To begin with you cant get a private room. They explained you need to be a VIP by donating a wing. Then they dont allow a family member to stay with you at night. The worst part of my entire experience was the nursing staff. I actually had to argue with the nurse in order to get a wheelchair for discharge Two other members of our family had similar experiences. We have all decided to stick with St. JOSEPH MERCY hospital in Ann Arbor where they provide caring compassionate care.
