Agra Airport(also known as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Airport)  (IATA: AGR, ICAO: VIAG) is a military airbase and public airport serving the city of Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The air force station is one of the largest airbases of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and has been synonymous with the Taj Mahal for over half a century. On 15 August 2007, the airbase celebrated its sixtieth anniversary. The station was opened during World War II as Royal Air Forces Station Agra and had a number of flying units located there. It was closed after the war and transferred to the Royal Indian Air Force. The prefix Royal was later dropped and the station was later renamed. Air Force Station Agra was established on 15 August 1947 and placed under the command of Wing Commander Shivdev Singh, who was the incumbent commander of the No. 12 Sqn. Based on the then present system of Commands, the airfield fell under the responsibility of the Western Air Command (WAC). The base remained under this Theatre Command for the next two decades. In July 1971 it was transferred to the Central Air Command (CAC), where it remains today.During its sixty-year history with the IAF, it has seen the likes of C-47 Dakotas, C-119 Packets, HS 748 Avros, AN-12s, AN-32s, IL-76s, Canberras, IL-78 MKI and now the Airborne Early Warning and Control/AWACS.The station now has the honour of holding the first inflight refueling aircraft Squadron in IAF service, with No 78 ‘Mid Air Refuelling Squadron’ (MARS) Squadron flying the IL-78MKIs.During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces Air Technical Service Command established a major maintenance and supply facility at Agra, named Agra Air Depot. The 3rd Air Depot Group serviced a wide variety of fighter, bomber and transport aircraft being used by Tenth Air Force and the Allied ground forces in Burma and Fourteenth Air Force in China. The depot stockpiled large amounts of material for shipment over the Himalayan Mountains (The Hump) by Air Transport Command cargo aircraft flying to forward airfields in China. It also was a major stopover point on the ATC Karachi-Kunming air transport route. The airport is mentioned in a chapter in Ernest Ganns Fate Is the Hunter, wherein he relays a story of coming with feet of destroying the Taj Mahal in a severely overloaded C-87 after takeoff.No. 50 Squadron IAF has been tasked with the operations of the newly inducted Beriev A-50E/I Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS) aircraft. The AWACS has been mounted on a specially designed IL-76 with advanced avionics & telecommunication systems.

Agra Fort is also called as a walled city and is also considered as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered as a tourist attraction and attracts many tourists all over the world. It is the main residence during the region of Akbar.Construction along the bank of the Yamuna River was begun by Emperor Akbar in 1565 on the site of an earlier fort. Further additions were made, particularly by his grandson Shah Jahan, using his favourite building material – white marble. The fort was built primarily as a military structure, but Shah Jahan transformed it into a palace, and later it became his gilded prison for eight years after his son Aurangzeb seized power in 1658.Many impressive structures like Moti Masjid, Jahangir Mahal, Machchhi Bhawan, Diwan-I-Am, Diwan-I-Khass and Khas Mahal are present inside the Agra Fort.

BJP promised in their election agenda that the will give Agra regional connectivity under UDAN scheme. But every winning election, they all disappear. Even proposed international airport has been shifted from Agra to Jevar near Noida because mostly BJP MPs MLAs have brought land in and around Noida. Seriously they dont have any interest in making as modern Agra. May be they will promise again before election. The funniest thing is all MLAs and MP in Agra from BJP, Jai ho,...

The airport is good as per the location and connectivity to the city but has only two flights. Now new flights are about to introduce but still they are postponing the dates. One drawback of the airport is also that youve to walk a lot from the gate if you cant get the bus which is having an hour frequency.

The airport is under the control of military and in military fort. No private car is allowed, they provide an authorarised tuktuk instead with the price of 50rp/person.The access to airport is open only 2 hours before your flight, my flight was delayed so I had to stay outside to wait.It is required to check documents, lugagge 5 times in total. Staff in checkin counter seem not really proficient. It took 15 minutes to check my passport, flight reservation, luggage tags and to print my boarding pass. It might be explained that there are few flights from here with limited chance for them to practice those tasks.

I’ve been to many small airports, and they are often very charming and much less crowded than the busier airports in major cities. Here, for some reason, there are only certain taxis allowed on the grounds which charge 3x normal rates. Your other alternative is to walk to the main gate, about a mile away. There is a bus which will take you, but you have to pay to ride to the gate- even when no overpriced taxis are available in the airport. I am used to being overcharged as a foreigner but I’ve never been stuck inside an airport before! Please fly in somewhere else. I’m glad I landed in daylight hours and not at night, since I am traveling as a single woman. Completely unsafe.
